Get better digestion the easy way.

January 15, 2008

Here are some simple tricks that will help you get more
benefit from your food and cut down on GI distress.

Relax before and while you're eating. When you stress, you
divert blood flow from your digestive system and to your
head, arms and legs to take action to fix the dangerous
situation causing the stress. No dangerous situation?
Focus on the present moment and ENJOY your food. What a
concept.

Get acid reflux? Try chewing gum after meals. The gum
stimulates saliva secretion which is an important part of
the digestive process. And if you happen to start chewing
it before you are stuffed, you'll give your digestive
system the 15 or so minutes it needs to tell your head
"I've had enough, thank you."

Break up you food consumption into smaller meals. Not only
will you keep your metabolism from going into "starvation
mode", you'll also make digesting your food easier. This
is especially good for older people, who produce less
stomach acid (but more GI distress, interestingly. But
that's a topic for another newsletter.)

Eat your protein first. Protein takes more digestive
juices, which are produced in decreasing amounts as the
meal progresses.
