Schedule control breaks
July 25, 2008
Yesterday I was giving a presentation to a local Kiwanis Club and I pointed out to them that we are ALWAYS training our bodies and minds. If you are sitting in a chair with bad posture, you are training your body to sit in a chair with bad posture. (When I said this, several people straightened up.) If you are stressing out without trying to rationally examine the situation, you are training yourself to surrender to the stress response. Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.
What can you do? You could take control of your life. Oh wait, that's crazy talk! Control takes sooo much time and effort - it's easier just to give it away... until it's time to pay the piper.
Here's what you can do. Schedule little 1-2 minute control breaks throughout the day when you actually pay attention to what you are doing and why.
Pick a Meridian Resistance Flexibility and Strength Training Exercise; you already know that it's supremely efficient and effective, takes no equipment and can be done anywhere by virtually anyone. Stretch and strengthen your body at the same time that you build core strength. Distribute them throughout the day; it's all good.
Check your breathing. Is it slow, deep and controlled? Is it satisfying? Is your exhale longer than your inhale? Do an Optimal Breathing Development exercise, or just practice your breathing awareness.
Do a quick round of Emotional Freedom Technique on whatever is bothering you.
Break up your bad habits with good habits and you'll reduce the bad training results, and sneak in some GOOD ones.
Remember Guare's First Law: Legitimate excuses do not repeal reality. Make the life you want. Nobody's going to give it to you.
